Black Sage (Salvia mellifera) is a Southern California Chapparal ecosystem native plant with a range that extends all the way to Baja. A shrub with dark green pungently scented leaves and white flowering stalks. Moderately irrigated and fertilized plants will fill an area of five square feet. Black Sage is not only an excellent native pollinator, garden honeybees will produce a uniquely peppery flavored honey from it. The leaves can also be used in tea. Plants will overwinter and perennialize in any mild winter climate.
